Monster mother-in laws

Monster Mothers-in-law

Research from Spontex shows that over 25 million women across the UK don their rubber gloves more often and scrub places in the home they never usually would, when their mother-in-law comes to visit. A third of daughters-in-law across the nation do the mother of all dusting, scrubbing and cleaning sessions before she arrives.

  • Over half of the 2,500 women questioned say they feel under pressure to clean parts of the house they don't normally touch.
  • And it seems they are right to be worried; one in five says their mother-in-law actually starts cleaning the minute she walks through the door.
  • The poll also revealed that 14% of mother-in-laws openly criticise the state of their son’s home

Perhaps unsurprisingly, women are far more worried about the in-laws coming to stay than their husband is. Over a third of wives feel under pressure to put in more effort in anticipation of the visit, compared to just one in five men. Only 32% of men would consider cleaning areas such as door frames, inside the oven and the ceilings - compared to a staggering 61% of the women.
